SAFF Championship 2023 final: It’s India vs Kuwait

At the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday, the Indian men's football team will square off against Kuwait in the SAFF Championship 2023 championship game.

India, the reigning champions, are vying for their ninth SAFF Championship championship after defeating Nepal 2-0 in the championship game of the most recent competition in 2021.

After captivating the Intercontinental Cup last month, Sunil Chhetri and company will also be pointing to repeat as champions.

In the SAFF Championship 2023, Kuwait, ranked 141st, will play India, which moved up one spot to 100th in the most recent FIFA rankings. The team of Igor Stimac and Kuwait drew 1-1 during group play.

In the other group matches, India defeated Pakistan 4-0 in their opening game before beating Nepal 2-0 to finish second in Group A behind Kuwait. The Gulf nation, like Lebanon, were invited to play this regional tournament for the first time.

India will count on captain Sunil Chhetri to deliver in the final. The 38 is in good form having achieved five goals in four matches, counting a hat-trick against arch-rivals Pakistan.

Defender Sandesh Jinghan, who missed India’s semi-final clash with Lebanon due to a suspension, will return to the team to bolster India’s defence ahead of the SAFF final.

Kuwait, meanwhile, reached the final following a 1-0 extra-time win over Bangladesh. The Rui Bento-coached side are also undefeated in the tournament.

Kuwait won their first match against Nepal 3-1 before defeating Pakistan 4-0 and drawing their last match against India.

Mobarak Al-Faneeni leads Kuwait in goal scoring with two goals in four games.
